About Canso, Nova Scotia

Canso is a small town located near the easternmost tip of mainland Nova Scotia. Its history as a fishing village goes back to 1504 when records show French fisherman working in the area. Grassy Island, now part of Canso Islands National Historic Site, played a key role in the war between the French and the English for control of land in North America. In fact, there was a movement to make Canso the provincial capital in 1724.

With the decline of the fisheries, Canso has struggled in recent years, but the "CAN SO!" attitude of the townspeople has resulted in initiatives such as the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, which has put the town on the map for many music lovers, and other economic developments.
